Rua Miguel Bombarda

The formerly run-down street of Rua Miguel Bombarda has transformed itself in recent years into the centre of Porto’s arty, hipster and creative quarter. Home to contemporary art galleries, workshops, fashion boutiques, vintage shops, cafés and tea rooms, it’s a good place to browse, though you won’t find anything open much before mid-day, or on Sunday. Some of the street’s more interesting galleries include the Cruzes Canhoto, at no. 452 (officially open daily 10am–7pm, but they rarely stick to this; phone 223 197 406 to check), where you can buy strange painted models and primitive, tribal and folk art; the upmarket São Mamede gallery at no. 624 (Tues–Fri 2–8pm, Sat 3–8pm), which sells sculptures by the likes of Victor Ribeiro for around €3500; and the more accessible O Galeria, at no. 61 (Mon–Sat noon–8pm), with changing exhibitions of paintings and sketches by artists such as Joanna Pinto, and a good range of more accessibly priced prints and illustrations for sale.

The street is also home to the Centro Comercial Bombarda, at no. 285 (Mon–Sat noon–8pm), where you can find a range of sometimes quirky independent shops selling everything from vintage clothing, toys, home-made jewellery and crafts to art, books, posters and vinyl. There are also food shops and a café, plus a grassy courtyard to chill out in.
